College Advisor Recruitment Consultant Terence A. Giffen earned both his B.A. in English and M.A. in Education at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, in 1973 and 1974, respectively. Within his first three years, he won "Teacher of the Year" twice while teaching English and coaching two sports at West Geauga Junior High School in Ohio. From 1976--1981, Terry wore many hats at his second school, The Kiskiminitas Springs School in PA. In addition to teaching English, coaching wrestling, football, and track, he became Dormitory Master, Director of College Counseling and Testing, Director of Student Activities, and Director of Transportation.
From 1981-2014, Terry served by turns as Associate Dean, Dean of Admissions, and Director of Counseling at a variety of institutions: Allegheny College, Coe College, Choate Rosemary Hall, Montgomery Bell Academy, and The Taft School. His career took a skip overseas when he accepted a one-year position as Head of the Upper School before another year as Assistant Headmaster for External Relations & Director of Admissions at The American School in England (TASIS) from 2000 to 2002.
Terry returned to overseas schools in 2014 as College Counseling Consultant at the Victoria Shanghai Academy in Hong Kong. The following school year landed him at Chadwick International School in Korea as Director of College Counseling. From February 2015 to the present, he has been a Search Consultant for the Saigon South International School in Vietnam, the Community School in Naples, The American School in Paris, and Commonwealth – Parkville School in Puerto Rico. At these sites, Terry has helped identify candidates for positions, such as Director for College Counseling, Dean of University and College Counseling, and College Counselor.
Terry is a member of the National Association of College Admission Counseling, Southern Association of College Admission Counseling, and the Counselors' Advisory Board for Southern Methodist University. Over the years, Terence has been a member of the College Entrance Examination Board; New England Association of College Admission Counseling; EISSCAP – Eastern Independent Secondary School College Admissions Personnel; ACCIS – Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools; Secondary School Admissions Testing Board; European Council of International Schools; London International Schools Association; Counselors Advisory Board for the University of Michigan; International Boys School Coalition; and the Counselors Advisory Board for U.S. News and World Report's Annual College Ranking Issue. He has consulted for Shady Side Academy, PA; Bilkent University Prep School, Ankara, Turkey; and The Alexander Dawson School, CO. Terry has also been a faculty member at "Discovery," a summer institute on college admissions and a seminar leader at the Fitzwilliam Conference, in addition to a presenting at NACAC and CEEB national conferences.
Terry and his wife, Suzanne, live on Dataw Island in South Carolina, where they both enjoy golf, boating, and traveling to visit their two grown children, Sarah and Jason, and their five grandchildren. Terry's son is the Director of Admissions at North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka, Illinois; his wife is a college counselor and coach. Terry's daughter, currently a home maker, taught Latin at St. Luke's School in CT for six years.
Terry will assist with recruitment and search services related to College Counselors and Advisors. With over 43 years of professional experience in education, Terry brings valuable knowledge to the Search Associates team.
