Dubai Fair

The Dubai Fair is organized by Bill Turner, who has recent leadership experience in 3 schools across the region, covering British, IB and American curricula. The Dubai fair is particularly appropriate for candidates looking for a position in the Middle East or Asia. The majority of the schools recruiting at the fair come from those regions, though a good number of schools from Europe and Africa usually come as well. This increasingly popular fair now attracts over 60 schools and over 300 candidates each year.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FAIR IS NOT A PUBLIC EVENT. IT IS STRICTLY BY INVITATION ONLY. YOU CAN ONLY ATTEND IF YOU HAVE BEEN INVITED, AND HAD YOUR PLACE CONFIRMED, BY SEARCH ASSOCIATES.

International schools of all kinds - including British, American and IB schools - attend our Dubai job fair, so it is suitable for a wide range of teachers, in all subject fields and at all levels. The fair is especially convenient for candidates already working in Europe, the Middle East, Africa or Asia who can reach Dubai within reasonable flying time.

The fair is organised by Bill Turner and is particularly appropriate for his candidates, but candidates registered with any other associate are equally welcome to request an invitation to register for a place.

Candidates wishing to attend the Dubai fair should contact Bill Turner (or, if not registered with him, their sponsoring associate) as early as possible to request an invitation. It is best to do this between September and December — and at the latest by the end of January.

The Dubai fair is always held over a Friday / Saturday weekend. If at all possible, candidates need to be free to attend on both of these two very full days of meetings and interviews, and should make their travel and accommodation arrangements with that in mind. However, special arrangements will be made to ensure that any candidates who, because of professional commitments, have to arrive late or leave early are not in any way disadvantaged.

Candidates who may not be able to attend both days of the fair should inform the fair organiser, Bill Turner, as early as possible about their arrangements.

2017 DUBAI JOB FAIR

Thank you so much for your interest in participating in our 2017 Dubai job fair.

This is to give you some brief general information about the event – more detailed guidance will be sent to you nearer the time.

First of all we expect, as usual, to be welcoming at least 60 schools to the 2017 fair.       Most of these will be from the Middle East region, defined quite broadly, but a significant minority will be from Asia, and we always welcome some schools from Europe and/or Africa as well.      Please don’t be in any way surprised if during the next few months the number of schools registered seems to be considerably smaller than 60.     This always happens, simply because many of the schools attending prefer to wait until December, January or even early February – when they will have a clear idea of their likely vacancies – before registering.

As the fair approaches, please be sure to log in regularly to check which schools have booked to attend the fair and what vacancies if any they may have posted.

Equally, if your plans change and you decide you won’t be attending the fair after all, please be sure to let us know as soon as you can, and/or log in and cancel your place.

If you have friends or colleagues who are not currently registered with us and who might be interested in attending the Dubai fair, please encourage them to contact me as soon as possible about registering.       We usually have a considerable number of teachers who contact us at the last minute, in the week of the fair, saying they would like to attend – but of course at that very late stage, because the registration process takes a little time, there’s no way we can accept them and they end up disappointed.      Early registration, between September and December, can make all the difference to a candidate’s prospects.

Finally please don’t rely exclusively on the fair as a source of potential job opportunities.    You need also to be making regular proactive use of our database to search for suitable vacancies and then apply for those that attract you.      Bear in mind that over half our successful candidates get their jobs not by attending any of our fairs but simply through effective use of our database being made by candidates and schools.

If you have any specific concerns or questions about the fair in the coming months please don’t hesitate to contact my office.

Bill Turner

DUBAI JOB FAIR    23 to 25 FEBRUARY 2017

Arrival and departure

Friday  24 February and Saturday 25 February 2017 are the essential days to be present if at all possible.

Signing in and collection of fair papers is best on Thursday 23 February between 3.30 and 5.30 pm.     If a later arrival is unavoidable, this can equally well be done on Friday 24 February between 7.00 and 8.00 am - most candidates arrive at the fair early on the Friday morning.

Special arrangements can be made to cater for the needs of any candidates who, because of inescapable professional commitments, have to arrive late at the fair or leave it early.

Departure some time after 6.00 pm on the Saturday (25 February) usually allows enough time for candidates who arrived for the start of the fair first thing on Friday morning.

Candidate registration for our 2017 Dubai job fair

Candidates should ask their associate well in advance of the fair for an invitation to register.     Online registration should be done as early as possible, ideally between September and December 2016 and no later than 1 February 2017.

The absolute final deadline for candidate registration is 17 February 2017.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES WHEN A JOB IS OFFERED

FOR CANDIDATES:  WHAT YOU SHOULD DO BEFORE ACCEPTING A JOB OFFER

Dear Search Candidate,

Accepting a position at an international school is an important decision for you and if applicable, your family.  Search member schools provide thorough information about their school composition, salaries, benefits and visa regulations and requirements on our website.  Before accepting a position, we urge you to do careful research about the school, its country, and whether this seems like a good fit for you.  In addition to reviewing the information on Search, peruse the school’s website and if possible, ask for a “guest” login to the community portion so you can see information provided for parents and faculty. We also recommend asking to speak to one or two teachers who are in a similar family status to you.

The contract should clearly lay out the contract period (including number of work days), workload, benefits, and as close as possible, the position you will be assuming.

When a school recruiter offers you a position, you should ask the following:

• “Just to be sure, are you definitely offering me a position?”

• “To help me confirm the details of this offer, would you please provide the contract or a sample contract?”

• “Would you please confirm this offer in writing, by email to me, copied to my Senior Associate, within the next hour or two? I will then be happy to email my answer to you, copied to my Senior Associate, by the agreed deadline of X hours from now."  [This implies that the offer is made at a fair, and that at least a sample contract has been provided. The text and time limits might be modified for offers made outside of fairs, but should remain equally clear.]

The questions below can be used for guidance when reviewing the offer and sample contract.  Be sure that you have read all available information (Search website, school website and any documents provided by the school) before asking the school to answer any of these questions.

OVERALL TIPS BEFORE SAYING YES

Take your time with your response.  You will be given a time frame for responding to the offer. Most schools will give you a few days in which to make a decision.   If the time is not long enough, and you are uncertain, politely request a bit more time.  If the school is unwilling to give you that time, think long and hard before accepting the offer.  You MUST feel comfortable when saying yes…because that’s where you’ll be spending the next two years.

WHEN IN DOUBT...If the situation becomes confusing or not what you expected talk to your Associate…that’s why we’re here!
