The Dream of a Generous Man: AbdulRahman Kanoo International School, Bahrain

Search Associates is pleased to welcome AbdulRahman Kanoo International School (ARKIS) to its catalog of premier schools around the world. ARKIS first opened its doors in 1997 to 60 preschool children in Manama, Bahrain, with the goal of providing a balanced pre-K–12 international education that would prepare students for the ever-changing world, and with the intention of adding a grade level each year. In 2004, the expanding school moved to a purpose-built campus in Salmabad, and in 2010, AbdulRahman Kanoo International School (ARKIS), co-educational and bilingual in English and Arabic, celebrated its first high school graduation. Many alumni can now be found working in respected local and international organizations. The school’s founder, the late Abdul Rahman Kanoo, shared this message with all employees of the school:

“It is my long dream to provide a school to the country and society where the generation is conscientious, open-minded and educated. I have devoted all my effort, thoughts and wealth to see this dream materialize into reality. . . It is my sincerest hope that the younger generation will grow into committed citizens who are able to concentrate and maintain interest in their country and be competent to meet the challenges of the future.”

Accredited by both the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, ARKIS offers its students the Cambridge International Primary Program along with the International Primary Curriculum, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma.  Also included in the curriculum are subjects endorsed by the Bahraini Ministry of Education as well as the Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System, a program that supports brain development in children Grades K–8. Currently, 2,210 pre-K–12 students, 90% of whom are Bahraini, are enrolled in ARKIS. A boarding option is available to students Grade 9–12. The staff of 178 includes 81 Bahraini teachers and three from North America and the U.K.

ARKIS is interested in hiring singles and couples—married, unmarried, or with a non-teaching spouse. Candidates must be certified and hold their academic degree in the subject they will be teaching. ARKIS is also interested in exceptional, newly-certified teachers as well as those certified in non-English speaking countries. Teachers up to the age of 50 may obtain a work visa in Bahrain.

Student life at ARKIS involves leadership, humanitarian, and intellectual pursuits. Students may participate in Model UN; Student Council, and Trade Quest, a business-education partnership program designed as a competitive financial simulation, geared to give students realistic experience in the stock market. For the CAS arm of the IB Diploma Programme, students travel to places like Madagascar, Mozambique, and Cambodia to assist the local communities with donations and renovations to classrooms and other buildings.

Salary and benefits include a monthly housing allowance, a one-time moving and settling-in allowance, and annual round-trip airfare. Foreign hires with family status are granted full tuition and book fees for two children and 50% of the fees for the third child onward. Professional development opportunities are provided, and local health insurance is fully covered by ARKIS. The school contributes 3% towards each teacher’s retirement plan.
